The Department of Biological
Sciences at Hunter College stresses excellence in both
teaching and research. Fully equipped facultyresearch
laboratories operate with major federal grant support,
and students are strongly encouraged to get involved in
laboratory research. Additional facilities are available
through the Center for Study of Gene Structure and Function
at Hunter College, consisting of of faculty from Biological
Sciences, Chemistry and Psychology working in the areas
of biomolecular structure and function. The Center has
provided additional support for construction of new departmental
research facilities, such as a state-of-the-art DNA and
protein synthesis and sequencing laboratory housed within
the department, and for upgrading of current facilities.
The core curriculum in
biological sciences prepares students for admission to
both graduate and medical schools and for careers in the
biological sciences including teaching, and the growing
industry of biotechnology. The curriculum emphasizes cell
biology, molecular biology and genetics as the foundation
for future careers in fields related to biological science.
