BIOL 250: CURRENT TOPICS IN THE BIOSCIENCES

An innovative seminar course serving non-majors who have completed two semesters of introductory laboratory science. The seminar will focus on topic areas that both enhance general scientific literacy and are of growing relevance to non-science and science majors alike:

  • EMERGING DISEASES/BIOTERRORISM

  • GLOBAL WARMING

  • GENETIC ENGINEERING

  • ETHICAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH ABOVE TOPICS

Two key components of these seminars will contribute substantially to the access of non-science majors to contemporary bioscience research.

A. A Visiting Scientist Program; scientists with broad appeal will speak with seminar students and present a general-level talk to the college community.

B. Online access to the major broad-based science journals, Science and Nature, which includes reviews of current research, special topics, and a wide range of articles that provide an entry point into general scientific literacy. Opinions formed as a result of reading science articles, along with other media presentations will enable one to make informed judgments, based upon the ability to quickly research, critically analyze, and understand the various positions on particular issues.
